schools - The whole number of Teachers was one hundred and seventy seven (177.) of whom one hundred and twelve are white.

The whole number of Pupils was Eight thousand Four hundred and eight (8.408.) - The free schools have mostly reopened for this session.

There is no diminution of interest, on the subject of Education among the Freedmen, - The schools are in a highly prosperous condition.

The number of persons treated by the Bureau Med. Officers for sickness during the month was, Three thousand one hundred and seventy six. (3.176). a decrease of one thousand one hundred (1.100.) from the previous month

The number remaining under treatement at the end of the month was seven hundred and sixty eight. (768)

This reduction is caused by the closing of several Hospitals and the transfer of the majority of the patients to the Civil Authorities.

Those who could not be otherwise provided for were transferred to Richmond and Hampton Hosptls.

The number of insane remaining on the 31st of oct was Fifty four. (54).

The number of Orphans under charge of the Bureau at the end of the month, was one hundred and forty. (140).

I have the honor to request that the appointment of Mr. D.C.F. Marx. as a Clerk in this Bureau (salary 80$ per Mo.) be revoked to date Dec. 9th 1867. and that Mr. Charles Seibert, be appointed Clerk at a salary of 70$ per month to date Dec. 10th 1867. also that the salary of Mr. John. B. Cooper be increased from 60$ to 70$ per month to date Dec. 10/67.
