of business and a continuance of the causes named in my last report. — In both cities "Soup Houses" have been established for the temporary relief of destitution, instead of the issuing of rations. — This method has enabled the Bureau to relieve the largely increased destitution at an expense of only about "One hundred dollars over the preceeding month.

The number of Refugees receiving rations was "One hundred and forty three (143), showing a decrease from the preceeding month of forty nine (49.)

The number of Schools in this District during the month was "Two hundred and seven (207), of which "One hundred and seventy (170) were Free Schools. The whole number of teachers was Two hundred and fifty one (251), of whom One hundred and sixty three (163) were white. The whole number of pupils was Twelve thousand seven hundred and fourteen (12.714).

The number of persons treated for sickness by the Bureau Medical Department, during the month was Three thousand seven hundred and thirty four (3734). — The number remaining under treatment December 31st 1867, was Fifteen hundred and eight (1508). —

The number of Insane remaining at the end of the month was Fifty nine (59.) —

The number of Orphans under charge of the Bureau on the 31st of December 1867, was One hundred and five. (105). —
