Philad'a 6 mo 30th 1865
Col. O. Brown
Esteemed Friend

I reached home just in time before our friend M. C. Cope, who was leaving for Newport R.I. Instead of telegraphing, he had written me a reply, which I suppose is now in the post office in Richmond. Friends appreciate the kind offer made to them, and the regard expressed for them, and their labors among the Freedmen. But they wish to act understandingly, and not to undertake any thing without due consideration. I have consulted several of the prominent members, who feel an interest in the enterprise, if they could the property permanently, (without fear of being annoyed or disturbed by its former owner,) for the benefit of the Freedmen, and manage it in such a way, as in their judgment, would most promote the present and future good of the colored race
