Office Assistant Special Agent Treasy Dept
Alexandria Va August 1st 1865
Colonel O. Brown
Genl Superintendent of Refugees & Freedmen
Richmond, Va
Colonel
According to your request I would make the following statements in relation to my appointment by Captain Alvord.
You will doubtless recollect Col. Fullertons writing to you about me and that you in answer sent a request to Capt Alvord that I should be appointed under him. Col F. handed me your communication. I immediately saw Capt A. who seemed much pleased as I was living here where he wanted an Assistant. I requested him to write you to know what my would be, this he said he did, but fora long time had no answer as to the amount. I know he received from you my letter to you strongly recommending my appointment.
On Thursday the 20th July, the evening before I left for New York Captain Alvord came to my office and told me that he had received a letter from you stating the highest you could pay me would be $100 per Month. I told him that money was not my object if I had only enough to support me but I would have to keep a horse to get along with my duties. This Capt A said could be arranged as he had forage for 2 horses but only required one.
When he left me it was understood that I was to commence my duties today. I felt that I was appointed for this place as soon as I received your letter from Col. Fullerton and I must confess that I was disappointed at the course Capt Alvord took as I had been laboring here among the colored people
