[[consideration]] tion of our petition viz.
What the present Superintendent of Freedmens Affairs for this
district, Capt Wilder may be removed and
his place be supplied by one whom we can
respect as a man and confide in as a
gentleman. We pray that a position so
important to the prosperity of our people may
be filled by one who will not by his churlishness
and cruelty outrage every good impulse
of our natures. That our sincere desires
to prove ourselves good citizens, may not be
called by exhibitions which repel from our
hearts all kindness, and every good emotion,
and arouse our indignant feelings to actual
bitterness. Let us not be subjected to
one who under cover of an Organization
based upon Christian and National philanthropy,
seems to us, bent only on his own self aggrandizement, and who in his dealing with
white citizens and colored, people, appears to us a stranger to every principle of refinement, of justice, and of humanity.
As your petitioners will ever pray for.
