War Department Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands Washington, October 31st 1865 Colonel O. Brown Assistant Commissioner &c Virginia. Richmond, VA Colonel, I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your communication of 27th inst. concerning receipt of reference from this Bureau of Communication of M&M E. Taylor on the 25th and asking instructions in reference to the disposition to be made of this property left after the restoration of the land to its original owner. In reply thereto you are respectfully informed that. It is not considered advisable at present to issue any definite instructions with reference to wood cut on land while in possession of the Bureau, when said land shall have been restored to its original owners. With reference to Mr. Taylor [[claim?]], it is suggested that you have a conference with him and see what compromise satisfactory to both parties can be made. On the return of General Howard, I will transmit definite instructions concerning all cases I am, Colonel Very Respectfully. (over)
