My Dear Colonel, I have to thank you for your kind letter of the 16th, handed me by Capt White - I can readily understand the feeling among the [[Virginians?]] that you allude to, from my acquaintance with Virginia character - They have so long looked upon themselves as the Salt of the Earth, & that their slaves were beasts of burden, subject to their imperial hand of command,
