Colonel
In regard to the enclosed communication of E.C. Darlington, Yorktown, Va. Jany 2d 1866, referred to me for investigation, I have the honor to report that Lieut Massey and myself made inquiry and found a colored man by the name of Morton (once elected by the colord people to serve in the Freedmens Court, but whom Mr Churchill a long time since had stopped his so doing) was the man who on his own acct was running the Court, complained of [[strikethrough]] and not the Court [[/strikethrough]] and unbeknown to Mr. Churchill Lieut Massey had in his hands when I left there Feby 1st and has since informed me that he had settled up and closed the affair entirely.
