endorsement is correctly quoted by Mr. Norton.

It appeared 1st That there was some doubt about the plaintiff being a citizen of the State of Va. He [[strikethrough]] appears [[/strikethrough]] seems to be a northern man of color who [[strikethrough]] came [[/strikethrough]] some time since moved down to Virginia. [[strikethrough]] to settle. [[/strikethrough]]

2d. The good were shipped from one of the Eastern States, and it was not entirely clear whether the best and simplest remedy were not to proceed against the immediate party to the contract of shipment. If however he elected to proceed against the "Old Line Steamers" it was [[strikethrough]] in the papers [[/strikethrough]] stated in the papers forwarded that the same was a [[strikethrough]] foreign [[/strikethrough]] corporation chartered and doing business in the State of Maryland. It was not stated clearly whether there was any property of that corporation at Fortress Monroe or any agent of such character as could be properly served with a summons which could bind the corporation.

The question was of such a [[strikethrough]] character [[/strikethrough]] nature as to render it quite uncertain whether the Freedman's Court had jurisdiction. If the matter were [[strikethrough]] to him [[/strikethrough]] clearly sifted in court I believe the plaintiff would be found to be a citizen of a northern state and also the defendant a [[strikethrough]] corporation foreign [[/strikethrough]] corporation foreign to the state of Virginia. The amount claimed was sufficiently large to bring the case in the A.L.S. Courts, and that of the State of Maryland was simply suggested as affording a [[strikethrough]] full [[/strikethrough]] convenient remedy for the Plaintiff. [[strikethrough]] the Dist. Courts in Va being still liable [[/strikethrough]] He may also bring his case in the State of Va if the defendant can be reached here as he now asserts.
