Office Superintendent Freedmen Norfolk Va June 24, 1865. Colonel O Brown Asst Com. Freedmen's Bureau. Colonel: I have the honor to report that a serious riot took place in this city last night between a large body of citizen, soldiers and freedmen. Besides dangerously wounding several of the freedmen the soldiers and citizens conspired together and destroyed some drinking and dance houses on Union & Wide Water Streets. Who are responsible for the commencement of these riots it is impossible to tell. They have been brewing for several days.
