They are not at work, the public thoroughfares in every direction to and from the agents office are daily thronged with them, and if some steps are not taken the whites will not be able to live much longer in the County.

Under the circumstances we respectfully ask the removal of the present agent.

We further represent that the mere fact of a stranger's being sent to the County as Agent for the Bureau, the freedmen at once infers that he comes as the enemy of the whites and as his apologist, and presumed thereon to disregard his obligations and to be guilty of all kinds of misconduct. On the other hand the white man feels an aversion to appearing before the Agent when summoned so to do, fearing that he is ordered before a biased tribunal. To remedy this if you will agree to appoint some reliable man of this county as Agent for the Bureau we know that many can be found who for the sake of peace and security to the County would gladly take it, and we pledge ourselves to sustain him heartily in a fair and impartial adjudication of all matters of controversy arising between the whites and the freedmen of the County.
