William Cozens

Resides in Columbia, says that he is acquainted with the woman "Martha", and saw her on the day she was reported to have been punished, did not know anything of her being punished, also says that she is of a disagreeable disposition, also that he has not seen anything cruel or out of the way in Capt. Stoops.

B.W. Sanders

Says that he is acquainted with Minos Poindexter, who is unreliable, and never had any reputation or character whatever, also has the reputation of being a thieving man.

Joseph Payne

Former Sheriff of Fluvanna Co. & Hotel-Keeper at Palmyra- Says that he does not know of any flogging by Capt. Stoops on the 11th of June- also that Capt. Stoops was not at Palmyra on the 11th of June- but that he left that place on the 4th of June. He does not know of any brutal treatment being inflicted by Capt. Stoops, while at Palmyra. He does not know of any freedmen being compelled to work for $5 per month, on pain of flogging or the "wooden horse".- Capt Stoops had no wooden horse at Palmyra. -says that Poindexter is working for $12.50 per month, and that his (Payne's) brother, pays $15 per month.

Joseph H. Turner. Says some hands on farms are receiving $8.00 per month

Says that he knows the woman "Martha", that she was on the "wooden horse"
