Spottswood House Richmond. Va.

Colonel,

Late this afternoon I have thought that it would be well for me to have an order from you - or perhaps it would be better in the form of a letter of instructions - mentioning the town of inspection which you desire me to make, the points upon which you specially want [[strikethrough]] the [[/strikethrough]] reports and directing me if possible to obtain from the Qr. Mr. Gen'l. Authority to assume responsibility for property to the end that I may eventually take charge of a district to be formed of the counties of Alexandria, Fairfax, Loudon [[Loudoun]], Fauquier, Pr. William, &c.

Some each document I think I had better have to show for my authority in [[strikethrough]] which [[/strikethrough]] what I do.
