Washington D.C. July 1. 1865.

Colonel.

Your communication of the 25th ult. enquiring about the Grass Crop in my district is before me.

There is a large amount of grass upon the confiscated and abandoned farms in my dist. and Capt. J.M. Brown, A.Q.M., formerly in charge of "Freedmen and Gov't Farms, Dept. of Washington" - now Q.M. on Gen'l. Howard's staff. has a large force at work securing the crop.

Most of the hay on the lands lying within the military lines will be secured. It is impossible to secure the labor for doing more this season.

A great portion of the grass on confiscated lands not yet actually in possession of [[strikethrough]] by [[/strikethrough]] the Gov't. is being cut by persons living on those lands - and this matter will be subsequently considered.

As I have no funds whatever in my possession I suppose S.O. No. 10, - of your Hd. Qrs - June 26. - does not require of me a report today.

Very respectfully. your ob't. serv't.
Henry E. Alvord.
Capt. & Supt. - R.F. & A. Lands.

To Asst. Com'r. of Va. (over)
