Vienna, Fairfax County, Virginia
July 5, 1865

Colonel,

This place is on the Loudoun & Hampshire R.R. now used as a Military Road and is the farthest point on the road from the Potomac to which trains are run. It is fifteen (15) miles from Alexandria, a little North of West - five (5) miles from Fairfax Ct. House nearly North and is as far out in my District as I can well establish my office now. - as central a location as I can get and keep up postal communication, - it is as far out as any military forces are stationed. I have therefore decided to locate my office here, for the present at any rate. I have already seen the Post-Master General and he promises to re-establish a Post Office here within two weeks. It will be a great convenience.

The Orange and Alexandria R.R. will soon make connection with the Va. Central at Gordonsville. - then we will have a through post route to Richmond.

S.T. Lloyd's Official Map of Virginia I find to be the most correct of any printed of my district, in fact all my campaigning in Virginia teaches me that it is the most correct of all maps of the State. It is published at 164. Broadway, New York.
