Of abandoned lands there are a very large number of acres in my district, - probably more than in all the rest of Virginia together. Whether all abandoned and confiscated lands in the district are to be assigned to the Bureau. I know not. As I wrote before I have as far only the very incomplete lists of Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William, which I got at Bureau Hd. Qrs. The more I look at them the more incomplete and imperfect they appear. Many names are spelled entirely wrong and many lands are contained in the list of one county when I know that they lie in another.

There is not much good grass in this county that will not be cut by Capt. Brown. By the time I get my officers established in other counties it will be too late to make hay. I shall probably be able this week to get several thousand mules to graze on some of my lands in this county, - three cents per day each animal in the price hereabouts.

In making your estimate for Stationing next time please to include a liberal allowance for use of myself and Assistant Superintendents. Blank books will be granted in each office.
