If on the other hand it is probably that I shall not be needed in my present duties more than six or eight months, I should prefer to quit now.

To retain my place I must I suppose manage to get a commission in some other organization and be re-assigned to the Bureau. I am going to err what can be done is the way.

I have just telegraphed to you asking your advice and hope to get a reply today. Now I write for the same purpose and will be much obliged if you will answer this giving your idea of what I had better do and your wishes on the subject.

I will continue my work at any rate until I hear from you. It will probably be a week or ten days before my regiment will go home. I will meanwhile do what I can so that if I remain there will be no actual [[strikethrough]]sp[[/strikethrough]] stop and if I go my successor will have his work begin.
