Richmond, Va [[strikethrough]] Washington [[/strikethrough]] July 12th, 1865

To the
Honorable E. M. Stanton
Secretary of War

Sir:

Captain Henry E. Alvord of the Second Massachusetts Volunteer Cavalry is at present on duty in this Bureau of Superintendent of the 5th District of this State. His regiment is about to be mustered out of service and, I suppose, he necessarily ceased to be an officer when his regiment ceases to exist.

He desires very much to remain in the service and retain his present position and I am anxious to have him. The work of the Bureau in his district is progressing well under his charge. He is deeply interested in it. [[strikethrough]] his whole heart is in his duties. [[/strikethrough]]

In order to retain his present position he seeks a commission in [[strikethrough]] the [[/strikethrough]] some Regt of colored troops.
