Offices of Superintendent. Refugees. Freedmen & A. Lands,
Fifth District State of Virginia
Alexandria Va. July 22 1865

Col. O. Brown
Asst. Commissioner &c.

Colonel:
Finding this city to be for many reasons a more desirable location for my office than Vienna, I have removed it to this place.

Here I have excellent offices and quarters and am fairly settled. Hereafter please address me here.

Since I wrote to you describing my Sub-Districts I have become satisfied that the officer in whose sub-dist. the city of Alexandria was, could attend to nothing else- I have therefore divided my First or Sub-Dist. of Alexandria into the Sub-Dist. of Alexandria consisting of the city and its suburbs and the Sub-Dist. of Arlington, consisting of the rest of Alex'a. Co. Va. including "Freedmen's Village", several "Gov't. Farms", &c.

Colonel Eaton, Asst. Com'r. D.C. still retains control of the affairs in the Sub-Dist. of Arlington and General Howard informs me that he will continue to, for a time.
