Office of Supt. Refugees, Freedmen & Abandoned Lands.
Fifth District, State of Virginia.
Alexandria. Va. July 25, 1865.

Col. O. Brown,
Asst. Com'r. &c

Dear sir, -
I have spent a whole day in Washington trying to perfect some arrangement by which I can be retained in the service or re-enter it in some capacity but success has not attended my efforts.

It has been a principle of mine in life to stick to everything I attempted to do till it was done.

In this case I was bound to get some position so I could remain where I am, but for once at any rate I have failed.

Within a few days I shall become a citizen of Massachusetts again. - there's no help for it so I better submit gracefully.

Gen'l. Howard tells me that as a citizen, in a District where officers can be obtained, he will not feel justified in employing a civilian - so I must of necessity leave this Bureau.
