he immediately forward an order relieving Capt Ames from the charge of the district and ordering him to the charge of the 1st sub district comprised of Fairfax and Alexandria Counties, and another one placing me in charge of the Dist until his return.
   Under these circumstances I of course refrained from doing anything which did not seem absolutely necessary to be done and especally from doing anything which  would in any way interfere with what Col Marsh might decide upon, as his policy, on his return, and this accounts for the delay in many things that would otherwise have been attended to promptly.
   Col Marsh returned on the 10th but only to inform me that I would have to continue in charge of the district until some arrangements could be made for his successor as he intended resigning and leaving the service.  Since that time he has been making his ar [[rangements]]
