too, showing conclusively that it is a preconcerted plan to disarm all the colored people.

The majority of the citizens at Modest Town are opposed to such proceeings but you know they are a very different class of people from what they are in other parts of the county. In my opinion, and I have a good opportunity to judge, this gang of men were organized for the purpose of disarming returned colored soldiers and receives the sanction, at least of many of te citizens who aught to be engaged in better business, That these returned soldiers have given sufficient cause, or in fact any cause whatever, for such proceedings on the part of the whites. I do not believe, and as far as I have been able to observe, I know they have not, I have never discovered any riotous spirit among them, their behavior is equally as good as those who have not been in the army, and their disposition to be industrious is as good if not better, than those who did not go in the army. But whatever their intention - if this is permitted to go on it will not stop until every union person, both white and colored has been robbed and driven from the county. For my own personal safety I would request you to be caution in using my name in connection with the reports I make you. Having lost my arm whole fighting against them I am already odious.
