Col. I have the honor to acknowledge receipt of notice of order sent to Gen. Miles to detail five officers for Asst. Supts. in six counties.

I have just called on Gen. Miles, & his Adjt. Genl. informs me that they are very short of men and do not [[strike through]] think or [[/strike through]] know how to do it. He offers one that I do not think of any account and proposes two others of whom I know nothing. He also says with these as with others, they are liable to be mustered out or called elsewhere and that there can be no dependence of them.
