of the applicant & found that the people had been employed by Mrs Jordone in cultivating her plantation & had put in crops for which they had received no compensation other than their Subsistence. if turned away at that time they had nothing to live upon and as Mrs Jordone was unable to pay them at that time or until her crop was harvested. Mr. Marjorum did not deem it just to the Negroes to turn them away until they had been paid for their labor & they were permitted to remain

The Asst. Supt. failed to report his action to this Office until about two weeks since, being here he gave me these facts verbally promising to send the same in writing as soon as he returned to the County.

He left the next day. arrived at Wilson's Landing and was attacked with fever from which he died after a very short illness, being first removed to the Hospital at Hampton."
