Col. O. Brown.
Asst. Comr Freedmens Bureau State of Va.
Richmond, Va.

Colonel, I have the honor to report that the Downey Place was sold at confiscation sales and the purchaser will take possession on the 1st of Jan. It is now advertised for rent at auction on the 7th On it is a large barn 100 ft_ worth $1000, a school House and [[strikethrough]] persons [[/strikethrough]] house for Teachers worth 200 300 $500 and 10 or 12 good log houses with chimneys worth $100 each and more than $1000. worth of new fence. On it we have our poor house averaging 300 persons and there we gather our teams and Crops having built about 15 Corn cribs and a large Cook and and Commissary building all of which by the terms of sale we have a right to remove before January. As we have no land on which to move them, and they will not be worth very much to take down, will it not be economical to lease these places for the Bureau if the rent is not too high, for a year or more, or some other places to which we can retire with our prizes and traps.

I am Colonel very respectfully
Your Obt. Servt.
