Hampton Virginia

I hereby certify that I called on Capt. Wilder - Agent of Freedman's bureau - to complain of deforestations on my woodland, and learned from him: that he - Wilder - had authorized the freedmen on adjoining farms to get wood out of my woods notwithstanding they resided on other places.

He also acknowledged to me; that he had authorized one canoe or boat trees to be cut from my woodland - but two were found cut up

I then saw the freedman to whom this privilege was granted or said to be granted, who stated that he paid Capt. Wilder, fifteen dollars for said trees_ The name of the freedman is John Banks. Known to be a sensible man.
