Hampton Virginia -

I hereby certify, that Jos. Ridick a freedman, engaged in geting timber, and working it into shingles - from the land Wm S. Smith decd - told me - when I desired to know, by what authority he - Ridick - was depredating on said land - that Captain Wilder agent - employed him to work the Timber into shingles, that it was by his - Wilders - authority that he was engaged in this work; and, that Capt Wilder had agree to give him two thirds - while he - Wilder - was to receive the other third of the timber thus use or of the profits arising therefrom. He also stated; that he was requested by Capt Wilder to employ a number of hands, or labourers for a like purpose.
