Col. Brown,
Assistant Comr. of Freedmen &c,
My dear Sir;

Owing to my Father's illness, and inability to attend to business I have been obliged to seeing his pen ever since my return from Richmond. It has been impossible for me to call on Senator Harris at Albany, or to move in any way towards securing the position which you expressed a kind interest in having me seek. For the present I must remain at this post, until someone is appointed to take my place.

With much regret at my own disappointment, and with many thanks for the courtesy received from you,

I remain very truly yours
Truman J Backus
