Norfolk VA October 20th 1865
Col. Brown
Sir
My husband and myself left Norfolk some time previous to the breaking out of the war, and removed to Farmville, where we have resided ever since. My husband was a quiet peacable citizen, was employed as clerk in a mercantile house, and took no part in the military affairs of the country. At the time I left Norfolk placed in the hands of my agent my maiden property for collection, consisting of a double brick tenament, situated near the termination of Charlotte street. Some time since the property was taken from him by the government, where it still remains. I am here loosing time, and at expense, trying to recover my property and anxious to return to my home. My papers have been fixed and sent by Mr. Johnson (who attends to that business here)
