92 & 94 Liberty St. Cor. Temple St.
New York, Sept 21st, 1865

Col Brown,
Assistant Freedman's Bureau
Richmond, VA

Sir,
We beg to say that we are the owners of a certain piece of property 250 acres, known as the "Vancluse Estate", at Wilderness Virginia. We have just been informed by our agent in Fredericksburgh that the freed negroes have been placed upon the Estate and that they are burning and destroying the property. We therefore crave your protection and pray you to have them removed forthwith.
We had previous to the rebellion expended a great deal of money on this property and contemplated resuming operations upon it this fall, as soon as the neighborhood was sufficiently settled to make it safe to do so
During the reign of Jeff. Davis the Gentleman who was operating it for us was driven off, with his family, at the peril of life, and great damage was done to his own and our effects, machinery &c. Your kind attention to our request will greatly oblige

Your obedient Servant
A Beninger & Co.
