Hampton Oct 23d 1865. Col O Brown Commissioner for Virginia Dear Sir. I presented your communication of the 16th inst to Capt Wilder & he exhibited your order of Sept 1. There is a variance between them_ One gives the immediate possession, whilst the other only at the expiration of any lease_ There is really no lease_ but a negro who was a most worthless Free negro here before the war, has squatted upon one of them_ Will you be kind enough to give Capt. Wilder specific instructions in consonance with your communication of the 16th inst_ I am, Col Very Respectfully, F. A_ Schmeltz
