him & says if you want him for anything important you can telegraph to Genl Howard so, & ask that Mr Alford be sent in his place to Maryland, & he will return  Says he (Wilder) will be in Baltimore to day untill night at the Maltby House that if you get a favorable reply from Genl Howard that you can telegraph to him at that place & he will return to night, he wished me to say to you if he should not return for a few days that he is very desirous that you would assign him to duty here at his old place & let him look after this district in Peninsula, he has some interests here that require some attention that you would do him a great favor if you would give him this district to Superintend, fearing I might not be able to get to Norfolk to see you, I write
