Scottsburg Halifax Co. Va,
Sept. 23, 1865.

To Col. O. Brown
Chief of the Freedmens Bureau

Dear Sir
I have - living in my family - my wife's niece Miss Margaret Ann Pierce - only child of Mr Joseph Pierce Dec. late of Portsmouth Va.

The property of Mr Pierce was confiscated to the Government & I am now informed that it is about to be restored to the legal heirs of Mr Pierce; who left this only child of his first marriage, now nearly 19 yrs of age, & his widow Mrs Sallie Pierce (who was his second wife). The object therefore of this note is to inform you of the just claims of his daughter & to ask your interest in her behalf.

Very Respectfully &c
(Rev.) Geo. G. Exall.

P.S. The property left by Mr Pierce was in part the maidens property of Miss Margaret's own mother.
G.G.E
