I gave him two negotiable Notes, each being worth ($2,341) twenty three hundred forty one Dollar, he also contended that he was their lawyer and that, as he had their assets in hand, he would charge them ($250) two hundred and fifty dollars as lawyers Fee, and as the Negroes did not have any money, I ought to pay it, which I did and the Notes, as I understand were paid at maturity
