Statement of William Rector.

My name is William Rector. I was before January 18, 1863. the slave of Milton Davis of Rappahannock County. Va. On Monday, January 22, 1866, about twelve o'clk. noon, I had been to the house of Adam Anderson (col'd.) about half way between Warrenton Junction and the village of Warrenton, Fauquier Co. Va. near the turnpike, had obtained Anderson's gun, a U.S. Gov't musket, loaded it with duck shot and was returning to the place (about one mile a a half from the house) where Anderson was at work in the woods. my intention being to hunt squirrels. and was passing along a road made by the army on the farm of George Martin when George Martin came from a piece of woods to the path I was on, stopped me, and asked me where I was going. I told him. After a few more words he said "give me this gun" at the same time reaching forward and taking hold of the gun. I told him to let go of my gun. An altercation then ensued in which Martin called to a colored boy near by named "Aris" for assistance in taking the gun from me. The boy refused. Martin then told him to go [[Strikethrough]] to the house [[/Strikethrough]] and call his (Martin's) father. The boy did so and old Mr. Martin came. The two together then wrenched the gun away from me. George Martin in whose hands the gun then was threatened to shoot me and I ran. When about two hundred yards distant George Martin fired. Five shot struck me in the back, neck, leg, and hand. I ran on to where Adam Anderson and others were at work. George Martin soon afterwards came down on horseback near to where

over.
