Portsmouth Va Sept 19, 1865 Col. O. Brown Richmond Va Sir Your letter of 15th came to hand. I cannot furnish you with the "Order" or a "Copy" in the matter of taking my Iron Safe. A Mr Tukey was the party who did the business. I went to Capt Messenger and claimed protection for the Safe as I had had the assurance of all the officers from Genl Viele down that it should be permitted to remain in my Office. Capt M. stated that his business was "to take property" not to protect it and advised me to see you which I did and at that time satisfied you that if all [[?]] not to be taken. you postponed
