Bureau Refugees, Freedmen and A. Lands
Office Chief Medical Officer. State Va.
Richmond Va. May 5th 1866

Circular.

The estimate of the Chief Quartermaster and Financial Agent Bureau R. F. and A. Lands, State Va, for wood for Hospitals in the state during the month of May is not sufficiently large, to keep up any considerable proportion of the number of fires in Hospitals, which have been burning during the winter and early spring. The season of the year has arrived when the regulations cut down supplies for this purpose, and fires are not necessry in the wards of Hospitals except temporarily on some sudden change of the air from warm to cold. The utmost economy consistent with absolute requirements of the sick must be used. The estimates of the necessary number of fires during the month which have been received from many of the Medical Officers, are not, as a rule satisfactory, - being far too large for the season of the year. It is believed that there will be very few days in the month, when any fires in Hospital wards will be necessary. Medical Officers in charge of Hospitals will therefore see the necessity of keeping up no more fires than are absolutely necessary, as but a limited quantity of wood can be furnished.
