Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands
Office Surgeon in Chief, Department of the Potomac.
Richmond, Va., January 5th 1867.

Circular.

In making out monthly reports I notice that some medical Officers report as remaining at last report (monthly.) opposite various forms of diseases, more than were reported opposite the same diseases on the last previous report.

This error must be guarded against. In a few instances deaths have been reported opposite certain diseases, the cases of disease not being reported as existing under the previous or present report. How persons could die in Hospital of diseases, which are not reported as existing there, it is difficult to appreciate._

Care must be taken that no more "remaining at last report" under various classes of disease, are reported than the last report actually shows to have existed under these heads. And that no case of death from disease, is reported, where the existence of the disease is not also reported, either under "remaining at last report" or under "new cases."
