NARA 51 actually [?], you will see from the reading of the contract that they agreed to do such repairs as would be requires, which they have refused to do unless I pay them extra. The Freedman Frank Taylor, got in to a difficulty by stealing money and was put in Braidon Jale. I for the sake of this being at home agreed with the Sheriff to pay his fine of about forty dollars, which I did & took him out with the understanding that if he Taylor, did not pay the same to me that I was to remand him back to the Sheriff. That is & has been the law with both white & black of this state. I will refer you you to any jentleman of the cty of Jackson or Rankin County as to the standing of my carracter as a jentleman & hope you will remand said freedmen back to fill the unexpired time of their contract. I am very respectfully Nov. 21/67 W R Easterling To Capt Smythe Com Post Jackson Miss Fannin Miss.
