NARA 125

in cash about $115, to supply these members of their families that could and would not work. Mr Harris has furnished them with milch [[milk]] cows all the year and is removing corn left in the crib about ten bushels of corn for their bread. They refused to secure the cane unless they could get all - as these freedmen were former slaves to Mr. Harris, he has offered to give them forty acres of land each. But one would accept this proposition. The others refused because the land was not cleared, and Mr. Harris would not give them a years possession and a mule which however much inclined he was entirely able to do -

I am intimately acquainted with Mr. Harris and his conduct, as a former master and since, has been kind, liberal, and generous. I would most respectfully refer you to Edmund Richardson in regard to Mr. Harris's character and conduct.

Should any complaint be made or charges referred by these freedmen, against Mr. Thompson or Mr. Harris, you may rely upon the truth and fairness of the above statement.

Very Respectfully
Your Obt. Sevt.
Saml. Hunter
Registrar for Rankin Co. Miss.
