NARA 221

Brandon Jan 6th 1868.

Maj. Norton Bur. RF. & A.L.

Hon Sir,
I have commenced a a school in Brandon which is under the supervision of the Freedmen's Bureau. I formerly taught in New Orleans under the Bureau and was sent for from Philadelphia by Capt. Pease who sent us Governmental Transportation. My school numbers twenty seven though it will be much larger in a few weeks. Many of the people are too poor to pay the required tuition fee though they are most anxious to send their children. I saw an order while in Jackson which extract referring directly to my School as was I now recollect that a teacher under the bureau would receive a salary of twenty five dollars and the rent of the school and also her board paid. I commenced my school on that supposition and I am boarding with a widow lady whom I could not ask to wait for her bill. And as the Freedmen cannot pay in advance I will depend entirely upon the Bureau until my school is fairly doing well.
