"gesture," but history will record it as an unparalleled manifestation of brotherhood and unity. For not, in spite of the regime in Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah is still head of an African state and cannot be denied his place on the world platform when he chooses to occupy it.

Some days after the insurrection, President Julius Nyerere of Tanzania called a press conference at the State House in Dar es Salaam. The Nationalist, daily newspaper of Tanzania, reported that President Nyerere appeared "deeply moved." In the course of his remarks, he said:

....Two years ago when Chou En-lai said that Africa was ripe for revolution, this sent a shudder in some circles. That phrase has not been forgotten. Now we see lots of revolution in Africa which is not sending a shudder in the same circles.

What are the coups about? The last few months have seen changes of government in many African counties. The latest one has been in Ghana. What is behind all this?

I agree that Africa is ripe for revolution to shake off colonialism, neo-colonialism, exploitation and oppression. Is this what is happening in Africa? Are these revolutions the remove humiliation and oppressions of Africa? Let us take the latest in Ghana.

The enemies of Africa are now jubilant. There is jubilation in Salisbury and Johannesburg. Even a fool would beginning to wonder whether these revolutions would help Africa. What was Kwame trying to do? He stood for the liberation of Africa. There is not a single leader in Africa more committed to this than Kwame. Whom did he anger? Certainly not Africa or even the friends of Africa.

Kwame was absolutely committed to true independence. It can not be denied that there is neo-colonialism in Africa. The freedom of having a flag and a national anthem is not real freedom.

Kwame was committed to the unity of Africa. Africa can only be strong through unity to shake away all forms of oppression and colonialism. Divided as we are, we shall be weak. Kwame was completely uncompromising on African unity. Whom was he angering? Not Africa. Kwame was committed to the industrialization of Ghana. He believed that as long as we remain only producers of raw materials we are prey to industrialized countries.

Now we are being told that the economy in Ghana is not good. Nkrumah was pushing things too rapidly. Nkrumah is blamed for
