FREEDOMWAYS
THIRD QUARTER 1973

has emerged as an acclaimed world leader.

I have attempted to apprise the reader of the political, social and economic conditions that exist in India, for it is only through such an understanding that one can objectively evaluate the success or failure of a leader. I have made every effort to project a picture of a leader in motion who has taken an oath to struggle to improve the conditions of mankind. And lastly I have attempted to project her not as a idol to be worshipped or placed on a pedestal but as a dynamic person who should be emulated. The significance of Shrimati Indira Gandhi at this critical juncture in history is that she recognizes the dangers of uneven development, oppression and exploitation not only for India but also for the entire world and has cast her lot as a world leader to struggle and defeat these forces both nationally and internationally.

THE EDITORS OF FREEDOMWAYS join thousands of Americans, Black and white, in mourning the accidental death on August 8th of Dr. George A. Wiley, founder of the National Welfare Rights Organization and a leader in the struggles of Afro-American and the working and non-working poor.

We pledge to work with others in continuing the fight to which he had given so much of his time and great talent.
