undertook to organize fails of completeness because a friend of justice selected by the colored men, dare not sit; two of us compose the Court   The white citizen sitting with me is somewhat yielding in deference to my opinion so we get along tolerably well 

I have had reported to me one case of murder, in Isle of Wight County  Ann E Green colored walked 28 miles to tell me of the assassination of her father Bernill Green by shooting through the window of his own house as he sat by his fireside   I reported the case to Capt Flagg at Norfolk

I am organizing a school here and have the promise from Mrs Smiley of Richmond of a teacher; there is one other school about 12 miles from here under the patronage of the Society of Friends Mrs Smiley,Agent  I have not yet had time to give particular attention to schools at a distance

On Saturday the 3d inst by public notice I called together the Freedmen and addressed them in regard to their notations to the Government and the white citizens. I endeavored to show them the necessity of industry and the advantage of contracts for a length of time, assuring them of the protection of the Government in all business transactions based on industry
