Freedmens Court.

For Cumberland Co. meets every Monday at the Court House. Complaints & cases are greatly on the decrease, the complaints are generally claims of the freedmen, for compensation for last year's labor & occasionally an "assault & battery" case, the perpretators of the latter, when found guilty, are always severely punished.

In Prince Edward Co. Courts we have less complaints for labor, and but few cases of the beating or whipping of freedmen, but those few are of an aggravated nature, and we have fined one man $25. and another $100, The Representatives of the Whites and the Freedmen, are honorable gentlemen, and the decisions of the Court are in my opinion, rendered in equity & justice.
