read & explained to the freedmen also the Constitution of the US & c Mr. Pratts explainations to the people upon these matters were very clear & lucid. and seemed to be understood by the freedmen. I have suggested the following plan to the freedmen (who I am glad to inform you are improving nicely in their sudies [[studies]] at school). for the putting up of a building here for school & church purposes- (There being no church or public buildings here that can be had for such purposes-)

Upon inquiry I find that an acre of ground can be bought within the corporation limits for $100. therefore I have suggested that they purchase the land. Which I find they can do. and put up a cheap building which will answer the purpose of a school house & church. for the time until they can build a better. they are sanguine of getting aid from the (colored) Churches at Alexandria & other places & Miss Wood informs me that the N E Aid society will probably help them-

And here I will state that through the agency of Miss Wood. I have received nearly [[strikethrough]] sr [[/strikethrough]] enough clothing to supply the demands of the really destitute of the county I consider The N.E. Aid Society is doing much good in this direction books in abundance have been sent. In fact everything that has been asked for
