squarely met by Dr Cheatham and the commonwealths Atty that the court could not, be dispenced with without great damage to the freedmen on account of the expence of suits &c.
The commonwealths Atty, in charging the Grand Jury said of the freedmen that "history failed to show the first instance where any people had passed through a revolution and behaved as well as they had." He said "did they not throw up breast works for our men to fight behind; did they not stay at home and raise bread to feed the army. And since they have been free no serious disturbance has been committed by them." He then touched slightly on politics in which he said in substance that "he hoped the strong arm of the Administration would save us from a few dangerous men who were trying to ruin us." The second "Veto" as yet has scarsely created a whisper waiting probably for the action of Congress
