I hope to soon have another school near Sommerton.  There has been few cases of small pox in this village on resulting in death; no new cases have appeared for more than a week.

I have lately investigated the assassination of a colored man in Isle of Wight County; he was called from his house in the evening and shot dead.  The man on whom suspicion rested is in my opinion innocent; there was no evidence to warrant his detention.  I arrested and examined some others, but as yet, I regret to say, the deed is enveloped in mystery.  Perhaps a shrewd detective, in gray, might by staying some days in the neighborhood learn something.

I have lately turned over some criminal cases in which colored men are parties to the civil authorities; and they are banned in due form to appear at Court. In my opinion they will send them back to me, as prominent citizens say the Court will not be subjected to the "espionage" required in these cases; the term is not mine.  The Court, say these citizens, must be tainted or not attempt to administer justice.
