goods. Judge Christian issued a capias and she was arrested and in default of bail was lodged in Jail for appearance at the Oct. Court in this case she is not allowed a preliminary trial. Efforts to procure bail for her have been successful and she was released last Saturday

These cases have not been sufficient to test the disposition thoroughly of the civil authority to do Justice to the Freedmen. this will be better tested in a final trial, when the point to be decided will be not "provable guilt" but whether the accused is guilty or not guilty

There seems to be a disposition on the part of the whites to take all advantage the law allows them in these prosecutions, particularly in the case of this woman. The Colored labor under a disadvantage in one respect in these trials, and that is: it is with dificulty [[difficulty]] that they can find Counsel to undertake their cause, as they have no money to fee a lawyer, and he is obliged to take promises for payment often.
