of the Asst Supt. The Freedmen now seem to get along very well, but they place great dependance on the Freedmen's Bureau, for the reason, that they believe, that the officers will protect them in their rights.

The state of feeling existing between the Whites and the Freedmen is good. The Freedmen showing to the Whites that they have their rights, and that they will be sustained in them.

During the month I have made 16 Contracts between the Whites and the Freedmen for the year, at fair wages. There has been two preliminary hearings held in Criminal Cases during the month, one for Burglary committed during the war, and the other for stealing of hogs. Justice appears to have been done in both cases. The authorities here do not seem very anxious to try Criminal Cases of the Freedmen, on account of the expense incurred, but prefer them to be tried by the Freedmen's Court.

During the past month I have issued to aged and Destitute Freedmen part rations to 23 adults and to 21 children.

There should be at least one man, sent to
